Youth Movement Prevails in Victory Lane at SSP on Saturday Night

Newberrytown, PA (August 23, 2008) – The popular Stock Car Saturday Night racing program at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on August 23 provided the usual standard of wheel-to-wheel action all evening long as young drivers dominated the feature events. Dover’s Charles Potts won the 25-lap Late Model feature. Jimmy Slaseman of New Cumberland picked up his career first Street Stock main feature event. Middletown’s Eric Walker won the 20-lap Street Stock make-up feature postponed from Saturday, June 28. Alex Updegraff of Etters also won his first career Xtreme Stock Car feature. Stephen Nederostek of Walnutsport pulled of last lap pass for the Legends Car feature event win. York Haven’s Kenny Latz won the Mini Van feature event.

The evening began with the 20-lap Street Stock make-up feature from June 28. Bryan Shue grabbed the early lead until George Eash got by him on the ninth circuit. In two laps, Eric Walker moved by Eash for the lead. Walker went on to pull a half a straightaway lead at the end to pick up his fourth win of the season. Eash held onto second followed by Shue, Craig Morgan and Garrett Shover.

The 20-lap Late Model feature event began with Denny Willey holding onto the early lead for the first nine laps. Close wheel to wheel action was abundant behind Willey. Through the action, Charles Potts emerged to overtake Willey on lap ten when McClelland and Willey were battling for the top spot. Potts was challenged late by both Willey and McClelland, but was able to hold on for his second win of the season. Potts and Willey won their qualifying heat races.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature had polesitter Jimmy Slaseman taking the early lead. Slaseman ended up leading every lap to win his career first, but it was not as easy as it sounded. With a pack of fifteen car breathing down his neck every lap, Slaseman had to be flawless and he was to pick up the victory. Dustin Hollinger was stalking Slaseman during the event, but had to settle for second for the second week in a row. Dave Thompson Jr. recorded a third place finish followed by Garrett Shover and Steven Dove. Calvin Herman and Jim Rost Sr. won their respective qualifying heat races.

There were three different leaders in the first three laps of the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event. Lance Danmyer led lap number one, John Frye led lap number two and Alex Updegraff led the third lap. After Updrgraff took the lead, there were no more changes as he went on to pick up his career first XSC victory. Sam Rial came from last to finish second, with SSP point leader Donnie Broderick finishing third. Lance Danmyer ran another strong race to finish fourth, followed by Sean Todd in fifth. Mike Zeigler Jr., Ron Vance and Updegraff won the XSC qualifying heat races. Chris Heller won the consolation event.

Lucas Montgomery led early in the 20-lap Legends Cars feature event. Scott Houdeshell took over the lead on lap four. Another feature event with close racing during the entire event had position changes every lap. From a tenth place starting spot, Nederostek used a slingshot move coming out of turn two on the final lap to grab the lead and hold on for the victory over Houdeshell. Geremey Sheaffer, who won the last three Legends Cars feature events had to settle for a close third. Jason Rochelle came from the rear early in the race to finish fourth, followed by 2007 SSP Legends champ Jeff Condran in fifth. Shane Glatfelter, Frank Polimeda and Reed Saloney won the Legends Cars qualifying heat races and Pat McDermott won the consolation event.

Kenny Latz won his second Mini Van feature of the season by leading every lap. Daryl Sipe came from last early on to finish second. Robert Fryberger, Brian Lefebvre and Chad Gracey rounded out the top five.
