Susquehanna
Speedway Park celebrated the 2004 season by honoring the 50th Anniversary of the speedway being in operation. During it's first 50 years,
the track has seen many changes, including a name change to
Midway Speedway for a few years in the 1970's. Whether
you've known it as Susquehanna, Susky, Midway, or SSP, it has consistently been a very popular
track to both fans and drivers alike.
Many of racing's greatest names
have raced here over the years. Names like Bobby Abel, Ray
Tilley, Gus Linder, Johnny Mackison, Bobby Hersh, Dick Tobias,
Kenny Weld, Jan Opperman and countless other legendary drivers
have left their marks on the pages of the speedway's history
books. To honor that history, SSP will be doing many things this year to memorialize
it's proud past, so be sure to check back from time to time
for further announcements.
In the meantime, here is a
random look
back at just a few of the stars and cars who have been a part of
that history. Some of these names are very recognizable,
other are somewhat obscure. However, all of these men, and many
others like them, each played an important role in those first
50 years.
